Although I have lots of time, my head is pretty foggy, so I’ll let this note suffice for a day to let everyone know that I am doing well, and thank you all for the prayers and well wishes and visits.For those who did not know, last Monday I had my Pectus Excavatum corrected. I have been in Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital for the past five days and unable to get on the Internet. The surgery went well, I’m in very little pain considering, and will be posting a longer more detailed account of the experience along with before and…

In describing the character and motivations of one Mr. Osborne toward a certain Mr. Sedley:One of the great conditions of anger and hatred is, that you must tell and believe lies against the hated object, in order, as we said, to be consistent.This is interesting for other reasons also, in that the motivation to be consistent is important and far reaching in its ability to modify our actions as human beings. This particular hook into our minds is discussed in the book, Influence: the Psychology of Persuasion which I had the opportunity to read recently.

Describing the not so venerable Mrs. Crawley:Picture to yourself, oh fair young reader, a worldly, selfish, graceless, thankless, religionless old woman, writhing in pain and fear, and without her wig. Picture her to yourself, and ere you be old, learn to love and pray!

An excerpt from Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackery describing the heart of Amelia.But there are things, look you, of a finer texture than fur or satin, and all Solomon’s glories, and all the wardrobe of the Queen of Sheba–things whereof the beauty escapes the eyes of many connoisseurs. And there are sweet modest little souls on which you light, fragrant and blooming tenderly in quiet shady places;

Two good friends are getting married today. And I have the honor of standing guard and ushering them into their new life together. Daniel has written a few words on his feelings about today, and I wanted to second the emotion, and let them both know I’m excited and honored to know them both and to be a part of their wedding.Dear Jenn and Daniel, it is my prayer for you both that God will bless you and your new family. As you both learn and cultivate your life together, I pray God will be present at every step, and…

As Adam Turoff explained once, Perl has two subtle advantages: manipulexity and whipituptitude. It’s very important to be able to solve the problem at hand simply and easily without languages and tools and syntax getting in your way. That’s whipituptitude. Manipulexity is the ability to use simple tools and build a sufficiently complex solution to a complex problem.What is Perl 6? by chromatic

A friends Ikonboard failed recently with an error saying:Ikonboard has exited with the following error:Modification of a read-only value attemptedThe problem ended up being caused by a change in the DBI.pm module from 1.49 to 1.50. The offending code is below:275 # check for weaken support, used by ChildHandles276 my $HAS_WEAKEN = eval { 277 require Scalar::Util;278 # this will croak() if this Scalar::Util doesn’thave a working weaken().279 Scalar::Util::weaken(my $test = "foo"); 280 1;281 };The error is on line 279. The negates the " and instead of passing a reference to a scalar value to the weaken function, if returns…

You’re probably wondering where all the new photos are, and possibly what happened to new text.Me too!Heh. Just kidding. Truth is, I’ve been pretty busy. With the holidays and preparation for surgery in a couple weeks, and a wedding to go to in SC, and trying to catch up with responsibilities at work and church, I just haven’t had enough time to go out and photograph anything new, and I’ve run out of stuff to post from the archives.Not a good enough excuse? Darn.Ok, here is my promise to you. I will devote a good 6 hours this coming Saturday…

I’m not the only one who has notices the similarity of Frazz to Calvin and Hobbes. It has becomes my favorite comic strip in the funnies section. Recently, I came across an example that had me remembering Calvin and Hobbes.

Last Year, a couple people posted what they read the year before. The idea intrigued me, so I kept a list this year. This year saw a return for me to Science Fiction, and to some degree Fantasy. I have, for the past few years, been either too busy to read much, or simply more interested in trying to expand my horizons to indulge in my favorite two genres.I also read more this year than the last couple years. I found keeping the list drove me to try and read more so I could have a longer list to post.…

Urban Saint Louis, a website that keeps track of developments happening in the city I live in, looks useful. I’m a pretty bad when it comes to civic minded stuff. Its nice to have a well designed and interesting looking site to keep me informed. Score one for the lazy web!

A brief note. I’ve been travelling for the past few days and haven’t been able to get online. Postings will resume today. Thanks for your patience!

Every year at thanksgiving, I try to take the family portrait. Its harder than you might think. Each year I end up having to photoshop heavily to get an image that is pretty decent. So here it is, before and after. There were six other images besides the base image used to composite the final product. Pre Touchup Base Photo:Final Product:

The thing about family is, its relationships are neither temporal nor conditional. If you are the son of your father, you will always be your father’s son. Unlike friendship, citizenship, and work relationships, all of which can cease to be true after a given amount of time, or under certain conditions, family is always true, whether acknowledged or not. In most religions, membership comes with conditions, and salvation is one or lost based on how well you meet them. But Christianity is different. Christianity is Family. And not just any family, but one with a perfect Father, and a perfect…

There’s a saying that, "Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise." The sentiment is found in proverbs. There probably is something to it. I’ve been late to bed and late to rise and very busy last several months, and now I’m sick. I wonder if its a portent of things to come?Been reading C. S. Lewis of late. Decided to finally finish the space trilogy, and so I read "That Hideous Strength". Lovely book. I had not really understood the level of Lewis’ distaste for modern feminism, and after reading "The Dark Tower"…

I’m sick. Sometime today, I shall endevour to post some more photos, but I’m running out of older stuff to print and haven’t had a chance to get out and shoot new stuff.I have a full blown cold, sinus preassure, stufy nose, sore throat. I expect I’ll start coughing soon. As it is, I’m sneezing a lot. Feel miserable, so bear with me.
